From the recording Valentine Hill
An original poem, written several years ago for my beloved valentine, inspired the title track for this latest album.
A 30 second mini overture of sorts, introduces the song's dance like rhythm, the simple four chords used throughout, and it's variations, which serve as short interludes used in the beginning, middle and end of the piece.
After a short pause, the main theme introduces us to a couple just waking. They are beginning a romantic day together with a slow gentle waltz, as portrayed in the upper register of the piano. The beautiful pastel colors of the morning sky emerge and the pair are filled with hope as the new day dawns.
The music slowly becomes more insistent, and the couple find themselves face to face with the "hill" of their relationship. They now dance in slightly darker shadows, as they move away from the more romantic morning light.
At times, "the hill", seems to have the upper hand and appears impossible to climb, but the couple refuses to be thwarted. The energetic, slightly triumphant ending signals that the day.
